How do herbs work in the body?

Herbal medicine works by stimulating the body’s natural healing responses, supporting balance, and addressing the root causes of various ailments.

The interaction between the chemistry of plants and the body’s chemistry at the cellular level is proven and unavoidable, leading to chemical reactions that promote changes in the function of organs and systems in the body.

The healing properties of plants lie in their “active ingredients,” which are primarily and often exclusively utilized by pharmaceutical companies. In herbal medicine, we use the whole herb, as the true healing power lies in the synergy of all constituents naturally present in plants. The effect of the whole herb is greater than the combined effects of its individual components.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) regulates the registration of herbal products in the UK.

Do You Have a Question?

Herbal medicine provided by a qualified herbalist is safe. A qualified herbalist typically has education and training in herbal medicine, which include formal education and apprenticeship. These professionals have an understanding of plant properties, potential interactions, and dosage considerations.

Safety in herbal medicine is influenced by factors such as the choice of herbs, proper dosage, and awareness of potential interactions with medications or existing health conditions. Qualified herbalists take into account an individual’s health history, current medications, and specific health needs when recommending herbal remedies. They may also consider factors such as age, pregnancy, and breastfeeding to tailor the herbal treatment accordingly.

It’s important for individuals seeking herbal medicine to choose a qualified and reputable herbalist and to communicate openly about their health circumstances. Regular communication with healthcare providers, including informing them about herbal treatments, helps ensure a coordinated and safe approach to health and well-being.

The time it takes to see results from herbal medicine or other naturopathic protocols can vary widely and depends on several factors, including the specific health condition being addressed, the individual’s overall health, the duration and severity of the condition, and how well the person adheres to the treatment plan.

In some cases, individuals may experience improvement relatively quickly, within days or weeks. This is often seen with acute conditions or symptoms. However, for chronic or complex health issues, it may take longer – weeks to months – to observe noticeable changes.

Naturopathic approaches often focus on addressing the underlying causes of health problems, which may take time to manifest as symptomatic relief. Additionally, lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and other naturopathic interventions may require a consistent, long-term commitment for optimal results.

It’s essential for individuals undergoing naturopathic treatments to communicate regularly with their Herbalist and Naturopath. Adjustments to the treatment plan may be necessary based on progress, and ongoing monitoring helps ensure that the chosen approach is effective and safe.

The patience is often key when pursuing holistic or naturopathic approaches to health and wellness. Your qualified Herbalist will create a personalised treatment plan and set realistic expectations regarding the timeline for seeing results.

The choice between herbal remedies and pharmaceutical drugs depends on various factors, including the severity and nature of the health condition, individual health status, and the desired therapeutic outcomes.

Certain conditions, especially chronic ones, may find relief through herbal medicine without the harsh side effects associated with some pharmaceutical drugs. These side effects may range from mild discomfort to more severe complications, impacting individual’s quality of life during treatment. In such cases, some people explore the potential benefits of herbal remedies as a supportive or alternative approach.

Here are a few examples of drugs that can be safely substituted with herbal medicine:

Antacids prescribed for gastro-eosophageal reflux disease (GORD), like Gaviscone, Rennie.

Side effects: Impaired absorption, magnesium versions can be laxative, aluminium versions can be constipating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence constipation, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, rashes, fatigue. Increased risk of dysbiosis and SIBO (Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) via lowering stomach acid.

Statins, prescribed for high cholesterol, high triglycerides. Drugs: Atorvastatin, Fluvastatin, Pravastatin, Simvastatin, etc. Side effects: muscle soreness and wasting (rhabdomyolysis), digestion disturbance, headaches, fatigue, insomnia.

Statins depleted Co-enzyme Q10 which is essential in cell function and healthy reproduction.

It may increase the uptake of retinol (vitamin A) which then may build up to toxic levels.

Diuretics, prescribed for hypertension, pulmonary edema, chronic heart failure, edema. Drugs: Bendroflumethiazide, Indapamide, Furosemide, Amiloride, Triamterene, etc. Side effects: Mineral loss especially hypokalaemia- potassium loss, hypotension, digestion disturbance, constipation, impotence, fatigue, muscle weakness palpitations and arrhythmias, nausea.

In some cases, herbal remedies may complement conventional pharmaceutical treatments or be used as a preventive measure.

HRT, Hormone Replacement Therapy, prescribed for the management of menopausal symptoms. Side effects: Increased risk of endometrial and breast cancer. Herbal therapy is highly effective for the management of menopausal discomfort.

Yes, herbal remedies have the potential to interfere with allopathic medications. As a medicine, they contain active compounds that may interact with the pharmacological effects of allopathic medications. These interactions can either enhance or reduce the efficacy of the medications.

Several herbs can affect the metabolism of drugs by influencing the activity of enzymes in the liver, which are responsible for breaking down medications. This can result in either increased or decreased levels of the drugs in the body, potentially leading to adverse effects or reduced therapeutic benefits.

It is important for individuals using allopathic medications to inform their Herbal Medicine practitioner about any pharmaceutical medication they are taking. Qualified Herbalist can then assess the potential for interactions and make adjustments to the treatment plan if necessary. This communication is essential for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the overall therapeutic regimen.

Modern Science Supports the Healing Power of Herbal Medicine

The field of modern science is showing increasing interest in the therapeutic potential of plants that have been used in traditional medicine for millennia. Researchers are seeking confirmation that herbal remedies possess the capacity to ameliorate a range of health issues, including some of the most severe diseases.

A growing body of evidence supports the use of plant-based medicines for various health concerns, and recent studies have highlighted their efficacy in addressing complex health challenges. The convergence of ancient wisdom and modern science is illuminating the true potential of herbal medicine for promoting health and wellness.

The relevance of herbal medicine is also evidenced by the growing interest in plant-based therapies in the medical community. In recent years, there has been a renewed emphasis on the study of medicinal plants and their potential therapeutic effects. This has led to the development of new herbal remedies and identification of many new compounds that have medicinal properties.

In addition to it’s therapeutic benefits, herbal medicine also offers a more holistic approach to health. It treats not only the symptoms of a particular condition but also addresses the underlying root causes.

The use of herbal medicine has been recognized and integrated into modern medicine, with the World Health Organization (WHO) placing importance on traditional medicine and herbal remedies as complementary to modern medicine.

The knowledge of the healing properties of herbs passed down through generations, has stood the test of time and continues to be relevant today. By integrating modern science with ancient wisdom, herbal medicine offers a natural and effective approach to promoting healing and overall health.
